F is for Fandoms: I'm a fangirl, ask me how...
April A-Z Topic: Fandom
When I tell people I'm a fangirl one of two things always happens. Either the person I'm talking to nods knowingly and we share a look of geeky solidarity, or they kind of raise their eyebrows and wonder when I'm going to challenge them to a lightsaber fight.
I guess there are two types of people in the world, huh?
The funny thing is, though, these people who look at me askance are more often than not fans themselves ... they just don't realise it. We all love things, overwhelmingly and unabashedly. It's just in our nature. And like it or not, we seem to focus our love on TV, movies, music and books. The love of the artistic, I guess.
Don't believe me? Absolutely positive that you're not one of the nerdy brethren and nothing I can say will convince you otherwise? Well, why don't you take a bit of a look at the video below which I found here and see if you still feel that way by the end of it.
The password, if it asks for one, is "fandom!" (removing the "").
I challenge any of you to not find something in there that makes your heart flip a little and a sense of nostalgia sweep over you. God knows, I was tearing up by the end.
Just accept it, kids ... you don't choose the fandom life, the fandom life chooses you.
All that proves is that I watch WAAAAAAYYYYYY too much t.v./movies. And that I still love Billy Joel. :)
ReplyDeleteAwesome post, my friend!
LOL! Me too. I recognised the majority of them, which means I probably recognised too many.
DeleteIt had me at Dr. Who and Star Trek. I'll add Sons of Anarchy, The Vikings and Warehouse 13.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen Warehouse 13, but I've heard good things about it!
DeleteMan, I would love to see that in a "slower" mode... so much good stuff in there. Went too fast.
ReplyDeleteSlu (fan)
I suppose they had a lot to fit in there ;D
DeleteI think I'm in a funky mood as I had no emotional reaction to most of it even though I saw a few of my favorite shows starting with the 80s tv shows, 90s star treks and my beloved Buffy. Ohh and the Brit Coms, I love them. I think the music takes me out of the head space to really remember and love the old stuff.
ReplyDeleteThe music helped set the mood for me, but I can see how it might detract.
DeleteAwesome!! There were several things here that- well, it's the stuff that spins my world. RULES my world. And, I'll admit, a couple of things that made me ask, "Wait, people LIKE that?"....but it just goes to show, it takes all kinds :) F is for Fandom, indeed....
ReplyDeleteGreat work!
LOL! Fandoms come in all flavours, I guess :D
DeleteVikings, Warehouse 13, Haven, Downton Abbey, Big Bang Theory, Doctor Who, old episodes of Dynasty. ABBA.. (I know, super geek, right?) :D I'm adding some of my own. Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series, Game of Thrones, (the books.) and on and on and on. Believe it or not, i do have a life. Quite a good one, but you know, there's nothing wrong with great TV. Okay, ABBA isn't TV, but anyway...
ReplyDeleteI've only recently found Downton Abbey, but what I've seen of it I love!
DeleteThe Walking Dead is turning me into a fanboy. Before that it was Twin Peaks.
ReplyDeleteOoh, Twin Peaks! That ones goes a fair way back. It was never one of my fandoms, but I know plenty of people who were crazy about it.
DeleteYay for Princess Bride!! :)
ReplyDeleteEveryone loves The Princess Bride :D
DeleteI am a nerd, but it's not accepting "fandom" as my password. [I think that's only because my computer stinks.]
ReplyDeleteAt any rate, thanks for the follow. I'm glad to reciprocate.
Cheers,
xoRobyn
Did you put the ! at the end? That's part of the password. If you did, you could try going through the link in my test to the page I got it from and trying there. Perhaps it's got something to do with how it's embedded.
DeleteThere were a few I didn't know, but the majority I did. I do like the song as well. :)
ReplyDeleteIt's a great song, isn't it. Perfect for this type of video :D
DeleteI can't view the video, even after enter the password fandom! :(
ReplyDeleteI'm a combination of both groups though. Because while I belong to several fandoms of various popular internet media (such as Homestuck) I've seen the insanity that tends to come with them, so I try and avoid being associated with that insanity. :P
That's a shame. If you put the ! at the end (people tend to leave it off), then I'm not sure why it wouldn't work. You could try going through the link in the text to where I got it from and watching it there.
DeleteIt's true. Everyone is a fan girl/boy of something!! You just need to find your muse!
ReplyDeleteHugs!
Valerie
Very true. Preach, Sister Val, preach!
DeleteGreat video--with lots of Star Trek!!
ReplyDeleteStar Trek, my babies!
DeleteI never really knew the term before this...I must live in a cave?! Love your blog though! Does that make me a fan?! Im catching on I think!
ReplyDeleteLOL! Ooh, I've always wanted a fan! That and a stalker! They're the signs that you've made it big, right?
DeleteAs the song goes "those were the days my friend, I thought they'd never end.." They just don't make them like that anymore.
ReplyDeleteTrue, but they're making new ones all the time. My newer fandoms are Glee, Spartacus, and Sherlock.
DeleteWell, darn it, it said the password was invalid. It's okay, I can embrace my geekiness without the video. I'm easily excited by things.
ReplyDeleteShannon at The Warrior Muse
Make sure you put the ! at the end, it's part of the password. If that doesn't work, you could try going to the site I link to in the test and trying it there.
DeleteYou made a video about me! About meeeeee ohI'm so touched by you fangirliness. How dud you know I knit like a maniac when I'm bored? You're not stalking me, are you?
ReplyDeletedud?
DeleteLOL! I knit when I'm bored too. And crochet. Hand made knitted socks are my specialty :D
DeleteFrom this day forward I am embracing my fandom. I will stand proudly and say.
ReplyDeleteYES I TOO AM A FAN GIRL
Came by from Tales Of The Reborn Crafter

Stand tall, stand proud! "Squee" and "OMG" with the rest of us!
DeleteThe video still won't work for me :(
ReplyDeleteRhonda @Laugh-Quotes.com
AtoZ #42
A few people have had that problem, but I'm not sure why. Did you make sure to put the ! at the end of the password?
DeleteI managed to make it until the song actually started before I began drowning in fandom.
ReplyDeleteLOL! It was quite the deluge of feelings, wasn't it.
DeleteWhat a great video! And oh yes, I've been a fan of so many of the shows/movies/cults depicted there! I appreciated seeing that clip of Colin Firth as Mr Darcy, of course, but also the clip of Ioan Gruffudd as Horatio Hornblower! Gawd, I was obsessed with that mini-series 20 years ago!
ReplyDeleteIt's a fandom propelled trip down memory lane ;D
DeleteGreat video! I discovered that yes, I am a fangirl. LOL
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the club :D
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteGeeky Sci-Fi, Fantasy/Fiction fan here...might explain why I'm still single...:)
DeleteMe too, sister. Preach.
DeleteGreat video and great post! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome :D
DeleteLoved the video,Starskey and Hutch and the one with the beast who lived in the sewers.
ReplyDeleteAnne/Is Anyone There
I remember watching that Beast show back when I was a kid. I loved that show!
DeleteFantastic! Love the video!
ReplyDeleteSo much work went into it, but it's amazing.
DeleteThe video is great.
ReplyDeleteI'm a fan of the great Jack White!
I'm lovin this Blog Challenge! Its rockin my face off. So many great blogs to visit.
It's been great so far, hasn't it! And we're only a week in!
DeleteThat was an awesome video...takes me back!
ReplyDeleteShannon at I Survived and Now I Run
It's very nostalgia inducing, isn't it.
DeleteHi Kellie,
ReplyDeleteOops, no, I didn't include the "!" Duh. So glad I came back. I loved it. Those were the days. Thank you!
xoRobyn
LOL! Glad you got to watch it :D
DeleteI need a fan, does that count?
ReplyDeleteI could use a fan too. I've always wanted a fan ... and a stalker. That means you've finally made it.
DeleteI'm a fangirl myself- of American Idol. People poke fun at me all the time!
ReplyDeleteEmbrace your fandom! Stand up, tall and proud, and declare yourself an American Idol Geek!
DeleteFans are rarely alone!I loved this not only for seeing that which I love, but also for the nostalgia f seeing things other people in my life have loved! awesome!
ReplyDeleteThe emotions I got from watching the video, it's astounding how much things like this can make you feel.
DeleteYou got me....just don't tell anyone at work!
ReplyDeleteYou could probably watch the video 20 times and see something new everytime! It was awesome. I kept saying, "oh!" and then a split second later would see something else I liked. Loved it :)
ReplyDeleteIt's very fast paced, I had to watch it quite a few times before I thought I'd gotten everything.
DeleteWe all have things we go fan girl for. I try not to let it show too much otherwise I might scare them off.
ReplyDeleteLOL! I tend to let my freak flag fly :D
DeleteI'm convinced, just never thought about it. Great post TFS
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the club :D
Deletefun video, love the song - everyone is into something :-)
ReplyDeleteVery true :D
DeleteDig this vid, especially all the 80s clips and P&P and Torchwood and Supernatural... ::sighs of nerdy happiness:: :-)
ReplyDeleteSome Dark Romantic
PS: It was you who had ants in the house, right? Some turned up in my parents' kitchen and had to be put down. I naturally thought of you. :-)
Some Dark Romantic
Yep, the ants in the kitchen was me. So you had an ant massacre too? I always feel a bit uncomfortable, it's almost like wiping out a whole civilisiation when you kill them. I don't know if I'm comfortable holding that sort of power ;P
DeleteThe video won't work for me either. I'm thinking it might be a google chrome thing but I'm not sure. Didn't need the vid to tell me that I'm a geek though lol. :)
ReplyDeleteThat's really strange. If you put the ! in the password then I'm not sure why it wouldn't work. You could try it at the page that's linked in the text.
DeleteThat just reminded me of how much I like that Billy Joel song. It also made me miss so many of my favorite TV shows (now cancelled) and movies I really like. I guess I am a fangirl. Or maybe I watch too much TV and movies????
ReplyDeleteLOL! I think that could be said about all of us :D
DeleteLOVE the song!! It's one of my all time favorite Billy Joel songs. The video is awesome! So many shows I love LOVE LOVE!! From Dr Frankenfurter to MASH. I'm gonna have to watch that video a few more times.
ReplyDeleteI'm a new follower.
Connie
A to Z buddy
Peanut Butter and Whine
It definitely takes a few watches to catch them all!
DeleteWell, you know my nerdy leanings, so not only did I love the video, but also, I can't help but think, "they could have thought of better Weird Al-esque lyrics." So I did..."Doctor Who, Torchwood too, Neil Labute, Willow's cute, Firefly, Bill Nye, Iron Giant made me cry...We didn't start the fire..." Come ON! Billy Joel laid out the easiest song to parody and these video editing/FBI Warning ignoring guys couldn't make it happen!?!
ReplyDeleteThey really should have spoken to you first ;P
DeleteOh, dear. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get the video to play for me. Maybe it knew I was a Bear.
ReplyDeleteFandom. Yes. I am a fan of wide open spaces. Alpine meadow, lots of grass and flowers, fresh air, birds singing, berries to eat, other critters who wanted to play. Idyllic.
Blessings and Bear hugs!
Bears Noting
A few people have had that problem. Did you make sure to include the ! in the password? If you did, you could try going to the page linked in the text and trying there.
DeleteWell, they say you should learn something new every day - I just did. Yes I'm a fandom - an old one at that! Thanks for the post and lesson.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the brethren :D
DeleteAdd my name to the list! I've always loved movies and TV and I don't know how I'd survive without it. This was fun Kellie!
ReplyDeleteJulie
Glad you enjoyed it :D
DeleteBob's Burgers, Neighbors, Elementary, Survivor. . .just a few that I'm a fan of this season. Thanks for posting the video. I still go Ahhh when I saw the young David McCallum in the Man from U.N.C.L.E. I watched that show just to see him. :-)
ReplyDeleteHe was rather dishy back in the day, wasn't he :D
DeleteYou got me!
ReplyDeleteI admit to my fandom and embrace it with open arms.
I'm feeling so nostalgic right now.
Love this post and the video : )
Welcome to the fandom brotherhood :D
DeleteI'm a fan girl! But a real geek trying to get video to work...didn't see (!) at first.
ReplyDeleteLOL! A lot of people did that.
DeleteBrilliant! Thank you for making me smile.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't heard the term "fandom" previously but yes I am a fangirl in so many ways! Yep I totally agree that "real life gets in the way of my fandoms"!
I read through all your A-Z posts and enjoyed them very much. I have subscribed and I look forward to reading more.
P.S. Would you mind if I share the link to this blog with my friends on Facebook?
ReplyDeleteSharon
Go right ahead :)
DeleteThank you :)
DeleteSometimes we even forget how much we enjoyed a show until we are reminded. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI am a fangirl of the TV show THE WALKING DEAD - I just need a T-shirt to prove it. :) But, if you want to see really geeky fangirl behavior, check out my posts of when I met Stephen King. Total. Geek. :)
ReplyDeleteThe Walking Dead has an enormous fanbase, from what I can tell on Tumblr. I really should give it a go.
DeleteYep, I am a member of club! Love your blog!
ReplyDeleteThanks! And welcome to the club :D
DeleteWe're all a fan of something/someone. How could we not be?
ReplyDeleteGreat post!
S
It definitely seems to be built into our DNA.
DeleteBeing a fan of something can definitely change the course of life. :)
ReplyDeleteVery true :D
DeleteFun post and vid. I'm so much of a geeky fangirl that I was a librarian for many years, and had the pleasure of buying $60,000 worth of fan-worthy materials for the library each year. Was that fun? You'd better believe it. Stopping by from the A-Z, and I'm your newest follower!
ReplyDeleteOoh, that's always fun! There's nothing like buying fan stuff on someone elses tab!
DeleteI fought the fangirl/fandom tag for a while, thinking it the preserve of teenage girls....but I now wear it proudly....and explain it a lot...it's a badge of honour (most of the time...not when I should be walking the dog but just a couple more fandom tumblrs to read before I go)
ReplyDeleteLOL! Ah Tumblr, the place where I lose so many hours of my life. I love that site.
DeleteHi Kellie .. I guess I'm not a fandom .. ie I couldn't get into the video .. but that what's the A-Z can do to us ..
ReplyDeleteGlad to meet you and I've subscribed etc .. so I'll be back .. and I am a curious person to put it mildly ..
Cheers Hilary
Oh, that's a shame. Did you make sure to put the ! at the end of the password? A few people got caught out by that one.
DeleteDefinitely a fanboy for most things geek, including science fiction, fantasy, movies, and rock music!
ReplyDeleteAll good, solid fandoms!
DeleteYes, there are certain things that just make the Earth spin.
ReplyDeletehttp://joycelansky.blogspot.com
Very true. I like to think it's Star Trek. Well, that and gravitational forces.
DeleteNodding my head in geeky solidarity.
ReplyDeleteNodding back to show I recognise a fellow geek.
DeleteHey there! I've been reading your weblog for a while now and finally got the bravery to go ahead and give you a shout out from Huffman Tx! Just wanted to mention keep up the great work!
ReplyDeletemy weblog - more helpful hints
I was just glad to see the non-traditional fandoms included.
ReplyDeleteThe word Fangirl is new to me, I had no idea I was one either....but now I am glad. I was lost but now I am found...often in front of the TV watching fangirl stuff!!
ReplyDeleteThe video says it's private and wants a password to let me see it. :(
ReplyDeleteI think all that really needs to be said here is, "yup".
ReplyDelete
