Sorry Edward and Jacob, I prefer Bella's Dad...

Today I went to see the new Twilight movie ... please don't judge me.  What can I say, I got hooked just like everyone else.  Those books are like literary crack cocaine, only ten times more addictive!  So I went along and watched like the good little lemming that I am.

But it made me realise something about myself I didn't know before.  A response I hadn't realised was becoming common for me.

What was that response, you ask?  Disgust at Taylor Lautner's disproportionate body to head ratio?  Amusement at the questionable acting skills of Ms Stewart?  Mindboggling bewilderment at the less than stellar special effects that involved chopping off a nine year old's face and whacking it on a toddler's body?

While all of these might be true, they're not what concerned me.  No, I'm referring to the fact that, while my movie companions were all either Team Jacob or Team Edward (and believe me, there was an awful lot of trash talking going on for a bunch of thirty something supposedly mature women), it would seem that I'm Team Bella's Dad.

That's right, in a film full of young, relatively good looking guys, I decided to make cow eyes at the heroine's father.

In my defence, he's not that much older than me (only about nine years), and he's cute!  I even like that silly moustache he wears in it.  And he's so normal and bewildered in it while everyone else around him are weird creatures like werewolves and vampires and Robert Pattinson.

Still, there I am sitting in the cinema leering at Bella's Dad, and I can't help wondering if it's the father thing.  Is it just that I'm attracted to men who seem like good parental material?  And if it's a trend, I wonder if I should be concerned?  You know what they say, once is an accident, twice a coincidence, but three times is a trend.  Lets see if I'm trending?

Dennis Quaid in The Day After Tomorrow:  Yep, definitely a hot Dad.  I know we were supposed to go for Jake Gyllenhaal and his big I'm-so-out-of-my-depths-but-I'm-going-to-be-heroic-anyway eyes, but I preferred the heroic father who crossed the country on foot in the middle of the mother of all snow storms to get to his son.  Heroic and paternal, a double threat!
Liam Neeson in Love Actually:  Now who wouldn't love the recently widowed single dad, trying desperately to be positive and uplifting for his son even though he's still mourning.  Heartstrings ... yep, they're definitely pulled.
Colin Firth in What A Girl Wants:  While I, of course, loved Colin in Pride and Prejudice (can anyone say wet shirt!!!), he was very cute playing a newly realised father of a teenage girl.  He bumbled around and was adorably British.  Not to mention he was very sexy riding that motorcycle!

Okay ... definitely a trend.

  1. I love Billy Burke on Revolution (on NBC in the States). My only issue is that he's a tad skinny, but I'll overlook that.

As for Twilight, I'm going this week!

    1. You're going to enjoy it! The effects on the baby are rubbish, but the ending is great! If you've read the books you'll flip out, but it'll be okay by the end.

  2. I think perhaps that you are attracted to men, not boys.

  3. I'm 78. As to the men you mentioned, I wouldn't know whether to have an affair with them--or just adopt them!

  4. I so agree with you - I am dying to go see the final but struggling to twist hubby's arm to take me. Jacob is not bad but Bella's dad is way better..... (And I bet far more experienced in the sack!)

    1. I never got the whole Jacob thing anyway. He looks about 14 years old, muscles or no.

  5. So, is the old show, "My Two Dads" like porn to you? Or Andy Griffith? Or Louis CK on his show, "Louis"? Or Keifer Sutherland on "24" even though his name is Keifer? You get the idea.

  6. I'm so with you! I don't understand why everyone goes for the teenage heartthrobs. Even as a teenager I wanted someone more mature. And really, Bella's dad is pretty crazy awesome to deal with it all.

    1. He is, he takes it all in stride. Got to love a man who can roll with the punches.

  7. Hahaha, I read this aloud to my boyfriend and we were rolling.
I'm with on Liam Neeson for sure.

  9. YES! Billy Burke and Liam Neeson FTW! Dennis Quaid is would be hot, I just can't get past what a douche he is. I want to throw a douche bottle at his head when I look at him for too long. I am watching the Revolution show JUST for Billy Burke at this point. And on facebook a few weeks ago I posted this decent status about how I was going to write in Liam Neeson for President, and not just because he is hot, but because he is a badass in everything he is in, even Love Actually.

    1. I try not to pay too much attention to the reality of it. Dennis is always so nice in the movies, that's what I'm going with.

  10. Maybe it's because you appreciate what a little maturity and some intelligence do for sex appeal. They are called 'callow youths' for a very good reason.

  11. ohhh I love your choice here and I am a huge Dennis Quad fan all I kept thinking in Soul Surfer how wonderful it was that Bethany could look into that rugged smiling face of her dad *,*

  12. Im a Twilight fan, just not on anyone's team. I loved the books - It was New Moon that I heard on CD while I quilted and you know, Bella's voice was just as humdrum as her actual character on screen. So when I saw the movie I wasn't too surprised at her bland self.

Haven't seen the 2nd Breaking Dawn yet, but excited to do so!

    1. I've always thought that she must have been written 2 dimensional on purpose, so the reader could put themselves in her place. But maybe I'm giving the writer too much credit.

  13. Ok, apparently, I am on Team "Dad" too--Liam, Colin, Dennis, AND Bella's dad...let's make tee-shirts! ;) Hee!

  14. It's ok to have a type. And the "Team Bella's Dad" T-shirt needs to be made.

  15. I hear Pattinson is really glad that Twilight is done. I don't think anyone hates Twilight more than him.

  17. I just don't understand why *anyone* finds Taylor Lautner attractive, whether you're 15 or 50. He looks like a llama.

  18. Who is NOT attracted to Colin Firth! He has that i-act-distant-but-i'm-romantic-in-the-inside that could drive everyone crazy. As for Twilight...well there is nothing about those movies I would save (seen them all, after my friends begged), not even Bella's dad, who looks far more attractive in the Revolution series.

  21. I had to look it up, but I didn't realize that that Billy Burke dude was that old. I assumed he was in his mid-thirties at the oldest. However I only know him from the two episodes of that Revolution show I watched.

This comment is contributing nothing isn't it?

  22. I didn't realise much of Belle's dad at this movie. Sad now to see that Jacab is now developing a disproportionate body...

    1. Poor guy, one of these days his shoulder and back muscles are going to get so big he'll flex and his head will pop right off.

  23. Haha. Weird creatures....and Robert Pattison....loved that line.

Being a guy, I don't really weigh in on the whole Billy, Jacob, Edward thing, though I do like me some Alice.

I've always tended towards the slightly more mature as well and would take Jane Seymour over all three leading ladies in Twilight. I might even like Esme in a close second.

Crap, I've said too much, they're coming for my man card.

  24. Okay I prefer him without the mustache because mustache to me equals Bella's dad. But I agree he is yummy to look at. Now if he had Edward's eyes and Jacobs abs and arms...ohhh mmyyyyy!! I used to be so anti-Twilight I thought it was ridiculous they had sparkly vampires. And then I read the book and they sucked me in and I ended up doing a marathon before Breaking Dawn 2 came out. Oddly enough I'm not done reading the last book but doesn't matter I can't not finish the series. Need Twilight Addicts Anonymous! By the way thanks for following my blog Bionic Dee! I just checked out who my followers were and figured I'd check you out. Love your blog!
