Yeah, that probably wasn't the best idea.
Bob: So that chick with the really red hair...
Me: Captain Janeway.
Bob: Yeah, her. She's the captain of The Voyager?
Me: Not The Voyager, it's just Voyager.
Bob: Huh ... but they say The Enterprise...
Me: True, but it's just Voyager. No "the".
Bob: Okay ... and the guy with the pointy ears?
Me: That's Tuvok. He's a Vulcan.
Bob: I see ... and who's the guy standing next to him?
Me: That's Neelix. He's the ship's Morale Officer and the cook.
Bob: Oh ... that explains the chef hat. Is he a Vulcan too?
Me: No, he's a Talaxian! Dude ... he's furry, with spots, and about four feet tall! What about that made you think he's a Vulcan?
Bob: Well their names sound kind of similar.
Me: So because they have similar sounding names they have to be from the same planet? That's speciesist!
Bob: Okay, calm down crazy lady! Jeez, you take this stuff pretty seriously, don't you!
Me: Damn right I do!
Bob: Okaaaaay ... what about that dark haired guy with the tattoo on his face? What species is he?
Me: Human.
Bob: But ... what's the pattern on his face then?
Me: A tattoo.
Bob: *muttering* of course it it.
Me: This isn't working is it. I'm not going to be able to convert you am I.
Bob: No, I don't think so ...
Me: ...
Bob: ...
Me: So, Doctor Who then?
Bob: Bring on the Weeping Angels!
So it turns out that Star Trek Voyager is not for the amateurs, alas. I guess some people just aren't up to handling its awesomeness.
Don't worry though, Bob, we'll always have the Weeping Angels.
I'm not trying to be sexist or anything but I always had a suspicion that Voyager was geared more towards women? My wife doesn't really have any time for the Star Trek universe, yet she went through a few years of watching Voyager religiously. Of course, I got drawn into it through her and actually quite enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteDS9 I couldn't seem to get caught up in. I also heard a rumor that there might be a new series in the works? One can only hope.
I've loved all of the Star Trek series, but I'll always have a soft spot for Voyager seeing as it's the first one I ever watched all the way through as it was released.
DeleteI'm with Bob. Yikes. I'd be in the kitchen making snacks.
ReplyDeleteI think that's fine, as long as they're Star Trek themed snacks! Triple alert warp core chilli? Tribble pot pie? Klingons in blankets?
Deletewhat's the one with 7 of 9? cuz i only liked to watch that one and only because she was on it. i wanted to look as good in a unitard as she did.
ReplyDeleteYep, Voyager was the one with Seven and her somewhat confusing femslashy relationship with Captain Janeway.
DeleteSorry, Kellie, I'm not a star trek anything person. Although I did like the movie :)
ReplyDeleteThat's okay Judy, nobody's perfect ;P
DeleteTNG was my bag. However, I really enjoyed the latest movie.
ReplyDeleteOh I loved TNG, mostly for Wesley Crusher. Man, did I adore that skinny, geeky kid!
DeleteI'm with Starr, TNG all the way. *waves Picard fangirl flag*
ReplyDeletePicard was a pretty awesome captain, but I'll always love Janeway for her "kill'em if they get in our way" attitude.
DeleteI'm the weird one here........I liked the original Star Trek, which I did not watch in re-runs btw. Man am I aging myself here or what? As for Dr. Who, well, I watch Torchwood....
ReplyDeleteYou like Torchwood!?!?!?!?! You, my friend, are a woman of discerning taste. I LOVE Torchwood, and my heart still breaks occasionally when I remember the fate of Tosh, Owen and Ianto.
DeleteYou should have started him out with Seven of Nine. If he can't work up any enthusiasm for her he must be from the planet Homocron.
ReplyDeleteI think my mistake was starting with season one. You're right, Kes was never going to be able to hold a guy's attention the way Seven did.
DeleteHa, this was so funny. Yeah, no Star Trek for me, either. I've watched Star Trek and the Next Generation, but that was mostly because my brother wanted to watch them and I went along with it. I did really enjoy the latest Star Trek movie, though!
ReplyDeleteIt was the other way around for me. My brother would never have watched any Star Trek at all if I hadn't forced him to. Now, he has them all on DVD. I've never been prouder :)
DeleteBecause I love you so hard...

Thank you!!! I love you to!!! MWAH!!!
Deleteheh heh. Never got into that one either, you're right.. It's definitely not for the amateurs!
ReplyDeleteI probably should have eased him into it with Next Gen or something :(
DeleteHaaaa hahahaha- Everyone in my family would -love- you! Bob needs to get with it. :)
ReplyDeleteI know! I told him he'd love it, so I'm going to go with the belief that seeing as he didn't then there's obviously something wrong with him.
DeleteThumbs up from me! Voyager is my favourite Star Trek series =D
ReplyDeleteYou, my friend, have excellent taste :D
DeleteBob and I would be good friends. Sorry...could never get into the series.
ReplyDeleteSigned, Lame-O
LOL! Oh well, I suppose we can't all be trekkers with impeccable taste.
DeleteI have had these conversations about Harry Potter with many and many times I was in verge of choking them.
ReplyDeleteI am a movie buff and my dad is more like movie virgin - many times he had taken actor names for some snacks, one time he showed a guy in TV and asked me whether he is "Aishwarya Rai" - Aishwarya Rai is like Diana/Kate Middleton of India. Grave mistake. Grave mistake.
LOL! Oh dear, if he can't tell the difference between the guys and the girls, maybe he'd better stick to books!
DeleteI never saw this show. :) Hope you have a fabulous weekend!
ReplyDeleteIf you're in any way into Star Trek, it's a good one. Just watch it from the start though, it's not one you can just pop into the middle of.
Deleteooh, VOYAGER was by far my favourite STAR TREK series, loved the stories and them being lost far away in space
ReplyDeleteI did too! I think their being out in the Delta Quadrant, completely cut off from the rest of the Federation, gave a really interesting feeling of "us against the universe", without having the same aggressive feel that DS9 did.
Deleteyes, I didn't like DS9 because it had too much violence, aggression and boring philosophical and religious crap from the captain :) VOYAGER had the most amazing plots which were often very scientific and deeply intriguing. And they had the Borg off course :) And Q used to drop by uninvited :)
