A girl and her bloodlust...

Today I was watching The Mummy Returns, it had been a while and I felt like watching Brendan Fraser back when he was still cute, and I couldn't help noticing something rather disturbing.

I hve this unnatural tendency to laugh uncontrollably when people get injured or killed in action films.

It's really starting to become a problem. I mean sure, in the privacy of your own lounge room watching a video, of course there's no one to hear your mirthful glee as someone on the screen has their intestines ripped out through their navels.  But in a cinema it's a different story. People give me the most unusual looks in there.

I suppose it's not surprising, they no doubt think I'm a serial killer in the making.

I'm not a total monster though. It's not like I sat through Beaches or Steel Magnolias giggling my head off. It's just the action/adventure ones that do it to me. Oh, and the horrors, they're also a scream (pun intended)! Honestly, I really do think we're supposed to laugh at them.

I'm not really concerned about the attention I get from the other cinema patrons, though. It's my friends I'm worried about. It must be difficult to go to the movies with someone who has a habit of breaking into uncontrollable laughter just because someone was is decapitated onscreen.

But come on, lets all be honest with ourselves. Aren't you all just little bit thrilled when someone bites it in the movies? I think it's that whole living vicariously thing that does it to us. We can't exactly go around killing peole who piss us off, so seeing it on the big screen can be kind of cathartic.

And really, is bloodlust really such a bad thing as long as it's kept in the movie theatre?

  1. Well, they do go over the top in a lot of movies, so I agree that sometimes they are supposed to be funny. At least I hope they know how OTT they are.

I can't watch that stuff, though. Give me lots of smut, but no violence please!

    1. I'm not sure why I react that way, but I definitely shock and embarrass anyone I go to the movies with.

  2. I hear ya. Sometimes I imagine the most annoying person I know on the receiving end of the hero's gun, sword, or bare hands and it gives me instant gratification.

  3. I never laugh at the good guys that bite the dust (usually my eyes are covered by my hands at that point) but I delight when the bad guy dies. I am not sure that I would be bothered by your laughter though. I would rather listen to you laugh that listen to the chatter of people behind me talking about their kids.

    1. I never laugh at the good guy dying either, but luckily there usually aren't many of them in horrors, and they're never the ones getting hacked.

  4. With 4 sons I think I have become immune to all things containing blood guts and gore.

    1. I can imagine! I expect it's the genre of choice for your house on movie night.

  5. Who doesn't enjoy a good decapitation?

    1. I expect the person being decapitated isn't too pleased, but other than that no one!

  6. I usually laugh uncontrollably also. I may be even more demented though as such things in movies seem to make me hungry!? What is with that?

    1. Hungry? Well, that's a new one on me! And you don't want to get hungry at the movie theatre, they charge a fortune for their food!

My son laughs when he's nervous.

    1. Really, I love them! There's nothing like the adrenalin rush of watching a horror.

  9. I'm sort of the same way with video games. And I can't be the only one who sometimes purposely kills myself in horrible (and hilarious) ways.

    1. I used to do that in World of Warcraft. We used to jump off the side of The Outlands just to see what would happen.

  10. LOL this made me laugh. I suppose if it's kept in theater it's not such a bad thing haha.

    1. Absolutely. Fictional bloodshed is hilarious, but real ... not so much.

  11. I usually hide my eyes during the blood and guts part, but i get a big bang out of all the screams! :) I can't tell if it's nervous laughter, or the maniacal kind. And Brendan Fraser was a hottie indeed. He has a cool name too.. i still like it, though i've since found out the name Brendan means.. 'one with smelly hair'. lol

    1. I think the reason we like the screaming is because people don't usually scream like that in real life. We get to live vicariously through them.

  12. I do the same thing. What, it's funny. And oooh, The Mummy Returns... Mummy, where Brendan's all yummy.. Sorry, lost it for a while.

  13. Hmmmm, I guess it depends on the character who gets it. In a slightly related story, I couldn't stop laughing at Untold Stories of the ER yesterday when my son was watching it. The acting is so bad that it is nearly impossible to take the actual facts into account!

    1. Heh, I love reenactments too. I especially love it when they get the actual person to do the reenactment! They're never good actors and it always comes across as hilarious.

  14. That's odd. I get frightened and sick to my stomach anytime someone says or does something funny in a comedy.

  15. I can't laugh at scenes like that because I'm too busy hiding my eyes.

  16. When you get the movie's cock sucking knob head who has pissed you off all movie finally get his knob cut off, fucking hilarious!

  17. Those scenes terrify me. I am always covering up my eyes and say "tell me when it's over."

  18. YOU'RE the reason that the kills get more and more absurd in these horror franchises. Although, I did get odd looks when I watched Let The Right One In and -SPOILERS- they show the little girl vampire's nether region. If you haven't seen it, it's a horror movie with a good plot. Not like anything Brendan Fraser has been in for the last decade.

  20. I once read somewhere, that teenagers like horror because it gives them an outlet for there own fears, let there be laughter, but I really don't like the level of violence in movies these days, it's just too gruesome and noisy. Anyway I found you on the A-Z challenge list and loved your title - I can see there a more than a few posts I would like to read on your blog. All the best for the challenge.

  21. I think it depends on the movie. Saving Private Ryan? I left the theater shell-shocked and disturbed. Old movies like The Blob, or really old mummy and frankenstein movies (not the blood and guts type), and low budget films where you can actually see the props--yes, absolutely. LOL.

    1. Oh, absolutely! I'd never dream of giggling my way through Saving Private Ryan ... now, Saving Ryan's Privates was another story altogether. Lots of giggling in that one.

  23. One of the reasons I like the Final Destination movies so much is because the people in it die in such amusing ways... I love to watch it... And laugh maniacally.

    Hugs!

  24. When I saw "The Grudge" EVERYONE in the theater laughed the entire time. It was utterly bizarre. Since then, I can't help but laugh a little at gruesome scenes.

  28. Brendan Fraser used to be cute... Is that a fact? See how little I know. It's depressing. 'Their intestines ripped out through their navels'... That's quite a visual, Kellie. I'll remember that for the rest of my blue life. Well, okay... I admit I feel so much better when another brainless teen bites the dust. Just don't tell anyone.

  29. The movie Summer School is right up your alley then. When Chainsaw and Dave try to scare off their new teacher, my friend and I were howling with laughter in the back row of the cinema. Oh the looks we were getting from everyone else.
