Demons are a ghoul's best friend...

It's Halloween week, everybody!  Happy Halloween!  May the costumes be tarty, the horrors B-grade, and the chocolate plentiful!  I hope you're all ready to go out there in your Halloween best and celebrate in the spirit of the season!

Spirit!  Get it?  Get it?

Well if you won't do it for yourselves, at least do it for us poor Southern Hemispherians.  Much to my chagrin, Australia doesn't really take Halloween very seriously.  Sure the supermarkets have started selling carving pumpkins in the past few years but they're stupidly expensive, and trick-or-treaters tend to be the exception rather than the norm.

We are severely Halloween deprived down here, we have to live vicariously through you lot.

But I shall not allow the lack of Halloween spirit in my homeland to bring me down.  I WILL carve my ridiculously expensive pumpkin.  I WILL have chocolate on hand just incase some intrepid tot finds their way to my front door in a home made Spiderman costume.  I WILL wait until it's dark out on Thursday night and then watch Ghost Ship, the absolute best B-grade horror film ever made.

Seriously, if you've never seen it you have to.  It's worth it for the opening scene alone. (careful though, it's pretty graphic)

No?  Bit too gruesome?  Oh well, there's always Hocus Pocus, I suppose.  A talking animatronic cat and Bette Midler as a three hundred year old witch?  Sign me up!

But whatever your spooky viewing pleasure, I hope you all have a Happy Halloween, my dears!

  1. I think it's pretty much a requirement that you watch Hocus Pocus on, or near Halloween! It certainly is in this house :)

  2. I haven't seen Ghost Ship. In your Halloween deprived honor I shall watch it...right after Killer Klowns From Outer Space.

    1. It's good to have priorities, and killer klowns should definitely come before ghost ships.

  4. OMG, I would never be able to make it through the Ghost Ship...I couldn't make it through the clip. Hocus Pocus is more my style. I have watched it a few times.

As for Halloween...it's really big here in Kansas City. There is an old warehouse district that has been retrofitted into haunted houses. Two of them are ranked as the most scarey in the U.S. The Edge of Hell and The Beast are the scariest things a person can do and still be alive. In the Edge of Hell house when you finally get up to the 5th floor, you are grabbed by some ghouls that throw you into a hole that is actually a circular 5 story slide that takes you back to the ground level. People love this though...the lines are around the block every night this time of year.

    1. Don't worry, there's no shame in not being able to get through Ghost Ship. It's not for the faint of heart.

  5. No real Halloween down under ey? How sad!!! Oh well, you have kangaroos hopping around everywhere and we have to go to special zoos to see those delightful critters.

  7. There's no Halloween here either. Well... except for the parties. People here never pass up an excuse to party. Especially if they get to dress slutty/ogle the sluttily dressed.

  8. I'm guessing Australia isn't big on Halloween, because every single time you leave your house you have to be on high alert for deadly creatures looking to kill you. You don't need a special holiday to be scared even more than you already are! Perhaps a better holiday for you would be something soothing and happy and relaxing. Perhaps Cuddle a Cute Kitten Day, where everyone gets to play and cuddle with a sweet little kitten?

  9. Holy crap! Never seen Ghost Ship! Those first two minutes are wicked! The original Halloween is my favorite - saw it in the theater when it first came out with my girlfriends. I'll never forget it. There was a guy sitting behind me with a HOOK-ARM and I was so scared that he was going to tap me on the shoulder! I would have crapped my pants!

  11. I've seen Ghost Ship, that was scary shit that was. Problem is too many other movies are the same concept.

    1. The horror genre is a bit lacking in originality, I'll admit. Still, it makes it that much better when someone actually does something new.

  12. Oh Hocus Pocus is a must! Sorry to hear Australia hasn't fully adopted Halloween. It's a damn good time.

Enjoy your chocolate and stray trick or treaters!

    1. I've always been fond of Hocus Pocus, but it definitely doesn't have the same gore factor as Ghost Ship. Oh well, no one said I couldn't watch both!

  14. While you might not have Halloween in Australia, at least you can have barbequeues at Christmas. You guys do that right? That's not just a stereotype?

    1. Oh, we absolutely do barbeques at Christmas. In fact, it's the preferred way of cooking a lot of the meal as we can do it outside and it doesn't heat up the house.

  15. I've never seen Ghost Ship but I have a strict requirement of B-grade horror movies in that they grossly disobey the laws of physics. From that clip it appears this requirement is met. It's officially on my list of movies to watch.

    1. My requirements usually include a ghostly child. Each to their own :D

  16. It's so funny, because I often forget that other people places don't really celebrate Halloween. I can't imagine not having been able to go trick or treating as a kid! But bravo to the kids that are trying to get that tradition rolling in Australia! I shudder to imagine what they get for treats from unprepared houses, though! Probably lots of Vegemite :)

    1. LOL! Actually, the treat of choice from houses that weren't expecting anyone is usually a packet of biscuits.

  17. Halloween is pretty big here, even though every other year it seems like it snows!! The weather is supposed to be perfect this time... expecting record numbers of little ghosties!
