Do I look like the sort of person who'd kidnap a cat? No, don't answer that...

So ... the other day I became a cat-napping suspect.

*Answers a knock at the door, holding Gypsy the Feline Dictator*
Me:  Hi, can I help you?
Her:  Hey, I'm your neighbour from number thirteen.  I'm just checking with everyone in the street to see if anyone's seen our cat.  She went missing a few days ago.
Me:  Oh, I'm sorry, what did she look like?
Her:  She's a tabby, like your cat.  And she's about the same size as yours.  And her fur is fluffy like yours...
Me:  ...
Her:  In fact, Ella looks exactly like your cat...
Me:  ...
Her:  *suspiciously*  How long have you had your cat, exactly?
Me:  *turning Gypsy away from the door protectively*  I got her from the RSPCA eight years ago.
Her:  *looking doubtful*  Hmm ...
Me:  ...
Her:  ...
Me:  *yelling* You can't have my cat!
*slams door*

Okay, so it probably wasn't the most graceful way to deal with the situation, but in my defense I've never been accused of feline abduction before!  In my own home, no less!

But going to someone's door and accusing them of stealing your cat?  Who even does that!

  1. Someone who desperately misses their cat and is grasping at straws. Gypsy is a sweetie by the way.

    1. I suppose I shouldn't be too harsh ... but they're still not getting my cat.

  2. I laughed out loud while reading this. I'm sorry you had to go through that!

  3. JK, that is a funny story...poor lady sounds desperate and grasping at straws. Her cat will probably be back in the morning with a bird in it's mouth.

  4. HA! TIme to teach your cat to bite people. And all cats do look VERY similar, but that's beside the point... teach the cat to bite.

  5. Cats do tend to wander into other peoples homes, Gipsy may have been getting fed at the ladies house and she may have adopted her without realising that it's not a stray.

    1. Gypsy is an indoor cat, I don't think she's been outside out of a cat carrier since I brought her home. It's much more likely they're trying to steal my cat, dirty cat thieves.

  6. Hahah I am having a good laugh picturing this interaction! I would be just as annoyed if someone started questioning my cat being mine!

    1. It's just so cheeky to come to someone's home and accuse them of catnapping!

  7. The noive! And tell her to put a collar and ID tag on her next cat.

  8. Neighbor from #13? Sorry she's desperately seeking her kitty! Ella is very cute! And she's got you to stick up for her!

  9. I wouldn't trust this nut job. Maybe you should have your kitty "chipped" in case she goes missing.

    1. Luckily Gypsy is chipped, they did it at the RSPCA before I got her.

  10. I have to be the devil's advocate when I say there is a cat in our neighbourhood who looks exactly like my cat. However in my case I am certain my cat has cloned himself so he cat go outside.

  11. How stressful for you, yes I would be watching your Gypsy very carefully. But in the poor person's defense, she had lost her cat, perhaps she was a little crazy with desperation. Hoping she found her cat safely.

    1. I suppose I can forgive her. I'd be desperate too if it was my cat missing.

  12. I can see where there is confusion in the cat world. I have a little Blue Russian cat and so does my neighbor. They are identical. Right after we moved here her little cat was sitting on my front porch and I thought Carmen had snuck out. Luckily before I grabbed the visiting cat to bring it in Carmen came through the room. Still...I wouldn't appreciate being accused of taking someone's cat. I think getting a chip put in is a great idea.

    1. I suppose if Gypsy does look like her cat it might have seemed a bit suspicious.

  15. I do hope that poor lady finds her cat. I'm guessing that someone directed her to you, stating that they saw you with "her" cat - yikes!
Many years ago, our Golden Retriever, Alex, was adopted by us from the Humane Society. He had been neglected. He also had a broken tooth. We hired a mobile dog groomer and that woman quizzed us on Alex relentlessly. Seems her dog had escaped several years previously through a window when her house caught on fire. He also had a broken tooth. Of course our Alex was going "no where" with this woman, but with his uncertain background and the broken tooth, sometimes even now I wonder.......
Hang on to your beautiful cat - and pray that the other one comes home - I will!

  16. You asked the question "Who even does that!" which required a question mark, ah, der, your neighbour does that AND they live in number 13, HULLO!!!!! NUMBER 13!!!!!!

    1. LOL! I suppose that's true, unlucky 13. It must be unlucky, she did lose her cat after all.

  17. I agree with Debra. Her cat should have an ID tag on her collar, and also be chipped. (They do chip cats, don't they?)

  18. Wow, how funny! I don't know what I would do if someone accused me of stealing their cat! And I don't think all kitties look or act the same. If it really was her cat I'm sure the cat would have reacted to seeing her.

  19. Thanks for the laugh. That is too funny. Did she ever come back, or did she just send the cops?

    1. No, she didn't come back. Hopefully her cat came home and she's not telling all the neighbours about the evil cat stealing woman at number 18

  20. I don't think you'd ever steal a cat. However, I've been looking high and low for my Chupacabra and you fit the profile of a mythical beast thief. Just how long have you had your Chupacabra?

  22. What a coincidence. Your cat and hers both have fluffy fur. What are the odds?

And seriously, if you really did steal her cat, obviously the cat didn't want to go back to her because it had no reaction--like jumping back into her arms. Or maybe that's just a dog thing.

    1. Oh, it's a cat thing too. Gypsy is beside herself when I come home from work, and I've only been gone for 10 hours or so.

I must ask... why is your neighbor so familiar with what your cat looks like? (spies)

  30. lol! I think it was your silence that made you so suspicious. I wonder if she ever went back to make sure that Gypsy wasn't your cat especially after that outburst. I would have done the same thing though. No one tries to take my cat away...

  31. I was approached (almost tackled) by a neighbor whose Yorkie (which coincidentally looked exactly like my tiny Yorkie) was stolen from her back yard. The good doctor's wife confronted me walking MY Yorkie on the beach near her house. It was uncomfortable for both of us. I was nice and answered her questions about where I got mine and when. Don't really know if she believed me.
