If MySpace is coming back from the dead, does that make it a zombie site...

source
A long time ago, back in the dark ages of the internet before streaming video was common and Facebook was just a glimmer in Mr Zuckerberg's eye, I had an account on a little page called MySpace.

Ah, those were the days, where you could do such innovative things like post a profile, put a pretty picture behind it, and if you were particularly clever set some music to play in the background.

Don't laugh, you young whippersnappers!  These were the pioneering days of social networking!  We had no idea back then what was possible!

For those of you who don't remember (or have blocked it out), MySpace was one of the first popular social networking sites out there.  Imagine Facebook, but without the apps.  There was no Farmville or Candy Crush back then, my children.  We had to play games the old fashioned way ... at games.com.

We all had a page, and we were all friends with Tom (the creator of the site who took the opportunity to make sure he had more friends than anyone else).  But its popularity took a nosedive as Facebook's grew.  It just couldn't compete with having the ability to virtually poke people, I'm afraid.

But I read the other day that MySpace is trying to make a comeback [link].  That's right, for all you people who are feeling nostalgic about the early 2000's you can now log back into your MySpace accounts and start using it again in its new and improved incarnation!

Oh god, I just realised what this means, another social networking site to keep up with.  What with Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest and Instagram, I think I'm going to have to give up sleeping just to fit another one in!

  1. Why do I suddenly feel like I really need a MySpace account?

  2. The nice thing about Facebook is that you have a little more control over who gets to see your feed. MySpace was a little creepy with all the stalkers. Do you suppose that will change with the new rendition?

    1. It sounds like they're trying to make it more like Facebook, so possibly. Of course, that's not going to make people leave Facebook, so I don't know if they'll be successful.

  3. I loved Myspace! I actually met really amazing people through it, too. lol I hated to let it go. I remember logging on and it saying like *2* of my friends were online. lmao I didn't delete my account. I guess I'm ready to become a zombie! :)

  5. I thought the thing that killed MySpace was that they tried to make it look exactly like Facebook. When I felt myself losing complete control My Space on MySpace account I deleted it. I already had a facebook account. I didn't need a MySpace account that looked exactly like my Facebook account. What was the point????

    1. And now they're trying to make it even more like Facebook. Oh well, I guess we'll see how it goes for them.

  6. Enough is enough. Too much social media for me. People these days have so many ways to speak but so little to say. I know, I sound like an old fart...because I am.

  7. I'm right there with ya! I was a Myspace user before Facebook loosened its registration policies. I transitioned over because all of my family joined FB, but I still have fond memories of MS. I hope it does make a comeback! :)

    1. Facebook is definitely the place where everyone and their Mum is. Myspace always seemed like more of an arty/music/creative site.

  8. I've never used MySpace. It'll be interesting to see if it truly does make a comeback.

  9. I'm old enough to have had a MySpace account, but I missed out on the craze the first time around. I guess now is my time of redemption.

    1. I had one too, but I didn't really understand the concept of social networking at that point so I never used it to its full potential. Maybe this is my second chance too!

  10. I completely agree with Robin! When MySpace tried to be like Facebook, I lost interest. If I had wanted to be involved in something like Facebook, I would have just gone to Facebook. It will be interesting to see what transpires. Now, if I could just remember my password! LOL!

    1. LOL! I was wondering what my password was back then too. I could try guessing, but chances are I'm not going to remember it.

  11. I always wondered how people keep up with Twitter, let alone all the other accounts and blogs. I guess that's why everyone is always glued to their smart phones. I'm with you - I want to sleep occasionally. How anti-social of me!

  12. My early-2000s nostalgia got allllll used up by restarting blogging a couple of years ago...everyone and their dog (sometimes seriously, haahh) had a blog when the craze first hit!

Now it's mostly used for performance promos and family newsletters, what happened??

    Hugs!

    1. Ah yes, the good old days when a page full of dancing hamster gifs were considered cutting edge.

  14. I didn't have a MS account and don't have any of the others you listed either. My daughter talks to her friends through Skype and has met some amazeballs people, but she is an adult and keeps it in check.

Even if it comes back, I'm not signing up.

Kellie you forgot Linkedin as another social media network...

    1. Oh how I loathe Linkedin! I got tricked into joining it, and do you think I can work out how to delete my account?

  15. No, No and NO !
    No more social networking.
    Its damn near an epidemic.
Doesn't anyone go out for coffee anymore ??

  18. I missed out on My Space, I wasn't surgically attached to a keyboard at that point. But can I keep up with another form of social media? I have enough trouble keeping up with Tumblr.

    1. I think most of us had. Poor Tom, he must have been so lonely all these years.

  20. Tell me it isn't so? I agree with some of the others...enough is enough. I remember My Space although, I didn't have an account. Truly if there is too many more social networking sites that a person needs to keep up with to stay connected with family and friends, I might as well give up sleeping and eating. Oh, but I won't give up reading your blog.

  23. When I first started my blog in 2009 I signed up to Twitter, Facebook and Myspace as well. Just last month I deleted my Myspace account because they forced the new version onto us without a choice. I had my page all set out nicely with it's logo, background pic and details. Then bang! All gone and an ugly grey basic template was there for me to redesign.

    COULD NOT BE BOTHERED!

My Myspace page is gone forever, along with Digg, Delicious and about 30 other website profiles that I had set up over 30 other websites over the last 4.5 years of my time online.

I'm culling and cutting my social media for a far better and easier life. Even though I have an Instagram account I NEVER use and a Pinterest page which has three boards and nothing else.

Maybe I need to do some more culling?!?!?!
