The end of an era, not to mention the most delicious potato feta balls ever...

Just around the corner from where I live there's a cafe.  They make a good breakfast, the staff take the time to get to know their regulars and learn their orders, the parking is great considering the location on a busy main road, and they have a nice little table just the right size for me stuck away in a back corner.

Is it any wonder that I quickly became a regular?

Every Saturday morning I find myself here, sitting at my regular table with my regular breakfast and my laptop in front of me, just killing a few hours before going to do the grocery shopping.  They know my name, bring me my breakfast without me having to ask for it, and the manager seems to have an almost supernatural instinct about when I'll need a top up on my diet coke.  Sure they may have a tendency to forget the butter, but nobody's perfect.  In almost every other respect they are a good, reliable cafe.

Or perhaps I should say were.

They've changed hands!  My regular cafe has changed owners and now it doesn't look like my cafe anymore.  I walked in this morning and there's grass in the outside dining area.  Grass!  Sure, it's fake grass, but still.

And the menu has changed.  My usual order isn't on it anymore.  Sure, I was able to order something that was an approximation of it, and it was nice enough, but the toast wasn't the same and the potato feta balls had been replaced with normal hash browns.  God I'm going to miss those potato feta balls.

But the worst betrayal?  My table is gone.

The old owners had about half a dozen tables set up in the small inside eating area and I'd always pick the one in the back corner where I could just sit for hours and not get in anybody's way.  But now they've replaced it with an enormous table for ten.  How on earth am I supposed to write without feeling self conscious if I can't sit with my back to the wall?

I kind of feel like I've been evicted and nobody bothered to tell me.

I know I'm being unreasonable.  Things can't stay the same forever.  But I'm just feeling a bit displaced at the moment, sitting at a brightly striped table out on some rather unrealistic looking Astro-turf.

I suppose I should try looking on the bright side ... maybe these guys will remember the butter.

Get drunk before letting someone else read your unfinished manuscript, it makes it SO much easier...

Source
I'm currently at that point in a writing project where what I really need is an outside perspective.  So, because I'm a grown up who isn't scared of letting people read her stuff (except for the fact that I'm TOTALLY scared of letting people read my stuff), I decided to ask a friend.  And yes, I may have had a glass of wine or three before I worked up the nerve to ask.

But whatever gets you through, hey?

The following conversation was the result.

Her:  So, what sort of book is it?
Me:  It's an erotic novel, kind of in the 50 Shades genre, but hopefully better written and without all the borderline abus...
Her:  (interrupting)  You had me at erotic novel!  Gimme!
*hands iPad over*
Her:  So these are the main characters?
Me:  Yep.
Her:  And who's this one?
Me:  That's the best friend.  Every novel has a best friend.
Her:  She seems very familiar.
Me:  (looks sheepish) Well, she might possibly sort of kind of be based a teeny little bit on you...
Her:  ....
Me:  I mean, I can always change it if you don't like it.  I didn't mean to offend you...
Her:  ....
Me:  I know she' seems a bit flighty, and really she's only very loosely based on you...
Her:  Kellie, stop!  This is...
Me:  Awful?  Offensive?  You hate it, don't you.  You want me to change it...
Her:  ... IT'S AWESOME!!!!  I'm a character in an erotic novel!  How cool is that!
Me:  So you really don't mind?
Her:  Of course not!  Why would I mind that?  But I do have one request.
Me:  (suspiciously)  Okay.
Her:  She needs to get laid.

Sue:  Lots.

Her:  Like, at least once a chapter.
Me:  ....
Her:  ... every other chapter?

I actually did get a few good tips out of her, once she's stopped giggling like a Catholic schoolgirl over it.  There's just no substitute for a fresh set of eyes.

But no matter how grateful I am, the best friend is NOT getting laid every other chapter!

Flexing my literary muscles...

I'm not sure if I've ever told you all why I started this blog.  No?  Well, I think like most of us, I'm using it as a writing exercise.  Flexing my literary muscles, so to speak.

It's been a while since I've written anything longer than a short story or article (I gave up on the longer projects while was was finishing my Uni degree), so when I realised just how much I missed it, I decided it was time to get my ass in gear and get cracking.  I've always got a few story ideas floating around in my head, and I decided that maybe it was time to haul a few of them out, dust them off, and start in again.

Of course, that's easier said than done.  I could have dozens, even hundreds of ideas, but without the discipline and sheer bull headedness to keep plugging away at them, I'd never get anywhere.  And, to be completely honest, my determination was decidedly out of shape.

And that's where the blog came in.

I suppose I'm looking at this as a literary exercise regimen.  I'm hoping that by building my stamina back up telling you all silly stories, I'll be better prepared to tackle those projects I've had on the back burner.

I'm not going to go into details on any of them ... you're all too busy doing your own to want to read about mine ... but I just felt the need to put it out to the universe.  I guess I'm hoping that by saying it out loud (figuratively speaking), I'll be shamed into pushing through when I want to give up.

One thing I am looking forward to is a colaborative project I'm going to start with a friend.  We've decided we need something fun, something without pressure, to get our writing juices flowing.  And because I can thing of nothing more fun than erotica, we're going to write us some smut!

I'm sure it'll be just awful, full of the usual stereotypes and far too many uses of the expressions "Ghosting hands" and "Spit slick fingers", but I don't care.

I'm going to write me some ooh er, I say Vicar, naughty, rumpty pumpty shenanigans.

Wish me luck!
